About Us
Not sure about you but the world of specialty coffee can be a little overwhelming. even if you've figured out what the flip; washed vs carbonic macerated mean - you can easily be swayed by some pretty inventive tasting notes or the latest trends.
We think coffee needs to be a little more fun and even more friendly, so set out on creating just 4 coffees that work amazingly with the ways that coffee is brewed and enjoyed. in 2020, a very bright THIS ONE, THAT ONE, THE OTHER ONE and DECAF were born. the beans origin, how it's processed, who farmed it and so on are of course, incredibly important - we keep them in a safe place here or you can scan the QR code on one of the backs of our bags. we've used words which we hope all coffee lovers will understand on the bags, helping identify what they might like most and take a little guesswork out / pressure off getting it right.
We're a disabled and queer owned roastery based in a little seaside town in Kent called, Margate. we want to do our very best to provide visibility and representation within the coffee community. wanting to create an equitable, inclusive space for all and build a business that totally and completely puts people and planet first (really though).
To try and make this world a little bit better - one of our mantras is 'DO SOMETHING GOOD'. Here's a list of some of the things we do:
- Our boxes, merch and labels are all sourced locally either in Margate or Kent.
- Our packaging is recyclable, either soft plastics or cardboard. We also have a reusable tub system for local wholesale friends to save on packaging.
- Our roaster uses 80% less energy than traditional drum roasters due to it cleverly recycling heat instead of it going out the end of the flue.
- We donate any additional coffee left in the roastery to the ambulance post in our yard.
- Our coffee sacks are donated for free to anyone locally that wishes to use them for their various fun projects.
- Coffee grounds from the roastery are donated to local eco fashion design Eirinn Hayhow who turns it into amazing coffee leather!
- All of our coffee donates to charity - either Missing People, Gendered Intelligence, Terrance Higgins or Shelter.
- We are a verified disability confident business and high means we are putting in practices and educating ourselves to ensure we are an accessible, inclusive, diverse and equitable workspace.
- Our staff have flexible hours and shorter work days. Are given full local gym membership as well as a queer focused mental health app membership.
- And of course we give 10p from every bag sold to the marvellous charity, Missing People UK or by choosing The Queer One it will go to glorious, Gendered Intelligence. these donations happen all year round and forever.
